The scan found nothing
Almost always one of three things:
- Photo access is limited. iOS "Selected Photos" mode hides the rest of your library from the app. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → SpotStash and choose All Photos.
- The photos have no GPS data. If camera location was off when a photo was taken, or the image was a screenshot, forwarded, or downloaded, there are no coordinates in the file and no app can recover them.
- Sensitivity is set too strict. Lower it in Settings and re-scan; borderline photos will appear in the review queue for you to judge.
A real catch was missed
Lower the detection sensitivity and re-scan — re-scans only look at photos not yet seen, so they are fast. Photos where the fish is small in frame, heavily backlit, or mostly underwater are the usual misses. You can also add a spot by hand from any photo in the library.
Something that isn't a fish appeared
Reject it in the review queue and it stays gone through every future scan. Aquarium and fish-tank photos, restaurant plates, and saved images from the internet are the common false positives; the app flags many of these already.
Photos stored in iCloud
Location and date metadata stay on the device even when the full image doesn't, so those spots map right away. If you want the app to fetch originals from iCloud during a scan, turn that on in Settings — it is off by default because it uses cellular or Wi‑Fi data.
Getting files into your chartplotter or app
- Garmin: export GPX, save to Files, then copy it to your card's /Garmin/GPX/ folder.
- Navionics Boating: export GPX and open it with the Boating app from the share sheet.
- Fishing Points, Gaia GPS, onX: export GPX and use each app's import option.
- Google Earth: GPX opens directly on desktop; My Maps takes the CSV.
- Excel or Numbers: export CSV — latitude and longitude are the first two columns.
Export won't open on the other end
SpotStash writes GPX 1.1 validated against the official Topografix schema, so a rejected file usually means the receiving app wanted a different format or a specific folder. Send us the app or device name and we will confirm the exact route in.
Nothing is uploaded, so nothing is recoverable
Results live only on your iPhone. If you plan to move phones, export a GPX or CSV first and keep it somewhere you control — deleting the app removes its data permanently.
Refunds
Purchases go through Apple, so refunds do too: reportaproblem.apple.com. If SpotStash didn't do what this site said it does, email us as well — that is a bug worth knowing about.
Feature requests
Species-level recognition, deeper trip stats and richer track options are the most requested so far. Send yours to Spotstashactual@yahoo.com; updates are free for anyone who bought the app.
